-point lead. look at the same quinnipiac poll, these internals are brutal for mitt romney. any way you slice it. unless you believe that quinnipiac, one of the most accurate polling that's out there is cooking the books. and if you do, change channels because you're listening to the wrong channel. >> yes. there's that. >> so there's the internals of this poll show that 52% of the people in ohio think the economy is getting better. 47% think the economy is staying the same or getting worse. and when asked who cares more about people like them, president obama leads mitt romney by almost 18 points. john heilemann, if it's ohio, ohio, ohio and the president's maintaining a five-point lead and he's ahead 2-1 in early voting in ohio based on this poll, if you assume that the people at quinnipiac are not in the tank for barack obama and are not sniffing glue and none of us at this table believe that because, again, four years ago and two years ago, quinnipiac was really one of the most accurate polls. >> yeah. >> then this is a firewall that is going to be hard for mitt romney to get past. >

, governor romney went into the general election season based on most polls as the worst nominee of either party ever in terms of do you like this person or not? do you think of them favorably, unfavorably, he has really improved and in fact in some polling he went past the president on that measure. and that is to go back to the question of what is the one dynamic of this campaign? would he be seen as acceptable? i think he improved enough to be acceptable he has not been destroyed the way kerry was destroyed. the swift boat commercials. >> and by punishable sizing his saying i was for it before i was against it and the video of windsurfing and all of that, remember, the perception was, kerry was destroyed by bush and that's how he won, the switch i will give you 120,000 votes in kerry would have won storks even though the bush people are widely thought to have completely destroyed kerry, he almost won, i don't think you could say that the real estate's campaign has done as effective a clinical, political, you know, death squad job on mitt romney as the bush people did on john kerr

mitt romney is ahead by a tick in most of the national polls, that raises the prospect of a split decision. president obama winning the electoral college and mitt romney winning the popular vote. i think the aftermath of hurricane sandy makes that more likely because it's likely to depress turnout in the safety democratic seats in the northeast. that doesn't affect the electoral college. places like new york and new jersey are still going to vote democratic but it could have an impact on this prospect that for the second time since 2000, we would have a disparity between the finish and the popular vote and the electoral college. >> and the only question becomes do we end up with 36 days of counting, maybe not hanging chads but maybe something else. reid, do you agree with susan? >> yeah. i think the prospect for a split decision certainly exists. based on the swing state polls, it's clear president obama has a lead, a measurable lead in the electoral college map. >> and more so because of the hurricane do you think, reid? >> i'm not -- i'm not entirely willing to do that. i don't

voters going to the polls in just six days, the campaign thaw is beginning. mitt romney is in florida, for three events today and president obama will return to the trail in nevada tomorrow. and in the last hour, governor romney has this to say about the country coming together. >> we come together at times like this and we want to make sure that they have a speedy and quick recovery from their financial and in many cases personal loss. >> people coming together is what's also going to happen, i believe, on november 7th, and -- i know we have differing viewpoints with regards to the campaigns. up until that point but we get to vote on november 6th and on november 6th you'll see us describe our representative visions for the country. >> a tight race nationally but president obama maintaining a lead in swing states including florida, virginia and in ohio obama leads romney 50 to 45% among likely voters. he also has a huge advantage when it comes to early voters. among those who have already cast their ballots in the state, 60% of ohioans favor the president while only 34% voted for romn
